Obama Temporarily Suspends Campaign

In other elections election news, Obama has declared he will take a brief break from the campaign trail to visit his ailing 85 year old grandmother, Madelyn Payne Dunham, in Hawaii, as her health has deteriorated "to the point where her situation is very serious." She had been in the hospital up until last week. Thursday he will suspend his campaign activities and will fly out to be with his grandmother.

Mrs. Dunham, Obama's white maternal grandmother, was referenced by Obama in a powerful speech he gave on race relations earlier this year when the Rev. Wright controversy had hit its apex. The Senator also briefly vacationed in Hawaii after he clinched the DNC Presidential nomination with his family. That was his last trip to the Islands. Obama will be off the campaign trail for both Thursday and Friday and it is presumed he will travel without his wife and their children. The extent of his grandmother's illness is not known but the situations has been quoted as "grave".

It seems apparent that we may be facing yet another election day calamity. Eight years after the Supreme Court made its ruling, effectively handing George W. the Presidency, we may see problems with new machines in place and a record numbers of newly registered voters overwhelming poll places. Such a series of issues may convolute the entire election process and skew votes in favor of John McCain. This concern at a time when Obama is enjoying his highest "favorability" ratings seems very out of place but it is a very real problem.

The majority of US voters will be using new machines and many states have implemented new election databases intent on reducing voter fraud. These systems do not have all the bugs worked out of them and serious problems are expected by some observers. "You change systems and throw in lots of new voters and you can plan to be up the proverbial creek," says voting consultant Kimball Brace. In 2000 the major issue, many will remember, concerned the now infamous "hanging chads" in Broward County, Florida.

In addition, despite that it has been proven statistically that the more negative campaign typically loses, John McCain has played into the idea that he can win through voter intimidation and voter suppression. In an interesting twist, McCain has enlisted the help of a firm in California, Lincoln Strategy, which has been investigated on multiple occasions for suppressing Democratic voter turnout. This, in light of the recent smear of ACORN, a ploy to link the Obama campaign yet again to some ambiguous and dubious scheme to deceive the American public, coupled with the McCain robocallers, lend further proof that the GOP plans to stop at nothing to keep control of the White House.

Thus with so many undecided voters in crucial swing states, it is entirely possible we may see a replay of 2000, with the highest court in the land once again deciding the Presidential election victor. There have been two recent additions to the Supreme Court by current President Bush which will undoubtedly lend a GOP bend to any decision. Can we trust them to get it right this time?

The McCain Automated "Robocalls"

Believe it or not, there is a new low in this year's Presidential race.

After the Wright controversy, the attempts to link Obama to terrorists, both foreign and domestic, the insults to his wife, his friends and even his patriotism, now McCain's campaign has gone high-tech. Sort of.

The McCain camp and some of his supporters have actually employed the use of very low-tech machines known as "Robocallers" to dial up people and deliver negative and sometimes very misleading automated messages. It has been reported that hundreds of thousands of such calls have been made recently, mainly because they are cheap and easy to produce. This has been suggested to be McCain's only viable response to the mind-boggling amount of media Obama has been able to put out given the record amount of money taken in from supporter's donations. Obama is heavily out spending McCain in all forms of media, however he has not taken it as far as to employ these cheap machines of ill will and discontent.

There are four primary messages, each referencing a falsehood regarding the Illinois Senator. One, the most widely played, is a sneering recount of Obama's relationship with William Ayers, an antiwar leader of the early 1970s. The caller says,

"You need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the US Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans."

Another message says,

“On the very day our elected leaders gathered in Washington to deal with the financial crisis, Barack Obama spent just 20 minutes with economic advisers, but hours at a celebrity Hollywood fund-raiser.”
However, these attempts to thwart Barack Obama's eventual win in the Presidential race are not new. It is ironic that McCain has chosen the robocaller route, as that was the very political tactic that many have attributed to his loss in the 2000 GOP primary, when George W. Bush effectively used the robocaller to attack McCain and his family in order to win the GOP nomination.

In an obvious effort to avoid discussing real issues facing our nation, like the Iraq War, education, health care reform, and the economy, McCain has taken his campaign into the mud by taking advantage of every opportunity to assail Obama's character. This is the strategy of the desperate candidate who knows his days are numbered and that the end is eminent.

In response to the calls, the Obama campaign on Friday added a link on its Web site to FightTheSmears.com, asking supporters to report robocalls.

Powell Endorses Obama

In a big week of important endorsements for Barack Obama from several major newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune, which has never endorsed a Democratic nominee for president, the biggest came not from the media but from one man - Colin Powell.

Powell announced that he would vote for Obama on an appearance of NBC's Meet The Press.

Disappointed with the negative tone John McCain's campaign has taken and McCain’s pick of Palin as a Vice Presidential running mate, Powell questions his friend's judgment-

"Now that we have had a chance to watch her (Palin) for some seven weeks, I don't believe she's ready to be President of the United States, which is the job of the Vice President," Powell said. "And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Senator McCain made."

When Powell considered his own run for president in 1995, his political advisers found that there was wide support for the retired general as a political figure. Powell, who has still been able to rise above the political fracas, is a widely trusted national security expert. His endorsement can only serve to boost Obama's credentials in the eyes of many who may have had questions about his competence in the foreign affairs arena. Powell's decision carries great weight and poses a strategic advantage for Obama as the next several news cycles will certainly now focus on this new development.

This endorsement, on both sides of the aisles, will also serve to ease the minds of many undecided voters who are more familiar with Powell and had not yet decided on a candidate.

The election, only a few weeks away, has seemingly turned decidedly in Obama's favor and what we will see in the coming weeks will be more negativity from the McCain camp in an effort to stem the flow of support for the Illinois Senator. The former Secretary of State reinforced Obama's qualifications by saying,"Senator Obama has demonstrated the kind of calm, patient, intellectual, steady approach to problem-solving that I think we need in this country."

Barack Obama made a deeply symbolic gesture today when he spoke in St. Louis. The pioneer spirit for this historic campaign, his Manifest Destiny, is alive and strong.

Today's rally in St. Louis is just another step towards the White House for Barack Obama. His speech, in the shadow of the Gateway Arch, the point of departure for America's pioneers in the 18th century, who set out to make this country great, became the portal to the future for the United States. Today Obama made that clear.

His decision to hold a rally at the Gateway holds many meanings for many different people. Collectively, it gives a sense of rebirth, a chance for starting over, a chance for renewed hope. The symbolism, not lost on anyone who attended, is a defining moment in this year's election. Like the homesteaders of old, with Barack Obama we stake a claim on our nation's future. Now is the time for true change and true leadership.

Obama, taken back by the staggering number of attendees, could only utter the words "Wow". The 100,000 people represented the largest domestic crowd he has ever assembled. And he drew another 75,000 a few hours later in Kansas City. His best line of the day came as a defense to the ever vigil McCain camp, which criticized his tax cut proposal, when he said, "John McCain is so out of touch with the struggles you are facing, he must be the first politician in history to call a tax cut for working people 'welfare'. George Bush and John McCain are out of ideas, they are out of touch, and if you stand with me in 17 days they'll be out of time."

In the coming weeks McCain will have to work exceptionally hard to have any chance of overcoming the forces of nature Senator Obama has put into motion. This historic campaign is one of the great moments in history and his eventual victory, come November 4th, will solidify our nation's future as a great one.

Ah, the Internet. Thank goodness for the Internet and awesome, on-the-spot moments of political candidates.

Everyone knows that Sarah Palin's number one attraction is her appeal to the common man and woman. In fact, she has made her stump speeches a referendum on the everyday Joe and Jane, saying recently that she reaches out to those in small town America.

It’s true, she does seem to strike a chord with us where the Washington elite seldom dwell. Moms love her feisty approach; hunters adore her direct, ambitious and strong words; everyday people connect with her appeal to a more gentle time. Only these people have the perchance to read real news, know geography and do not take the law into their own hands.

How many people find it appropriate to take their boss' money and spend it until the courts stop them? Or implore God, taking the Lord's name in vain, to justify a war hell bent on losing to win a few meager votes? The answer is, not many. These are but a few of the many quotes the GOP Vice Presidential candidate has uttered in her few weeks. Surely, the great John McCain could have found a candidate with a better ability to speak for herself. No wonder she has been hidden away by his campaign, as we already know.

Sarah Palin is the Achilles heel of the McCain Campaign, especially in light of her recent ethics violations, and it seems all the "Straight Talk Express" can do is to focus on Obama's supposed weaknesses to cover their own. Unfortunately, for the GOP, the American public is tired of the constant intrusion of crap sandwiches and Cheney-like statements.

With McCain moving away every day from his once middle stance as a reformer to nothing less than another George Bush, the attacks on Obama will get worse. Luckily, this will only further ensure true change in the form of a new direction.

Please vote Obama and we can rid our country of the Cheney politics that have dominated the last eight years.

"Joe the Plumber", Not Your Everyday Guy

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

Many are worried, especially after the last debate that our taxes may increase, our wealth will be spread around, the sky will fall and the world as we know it will end. This is the GOP strategy at its best (minus Karl Rove and the 2004 swift boat campaign that took out John Kerry).

Fear not, my friends (to steal a line from the Maverick himself), this is not the end of days. What it is, though, is an opportunity to set the record straight. First, Joe the Plumber turns out to be an unlicensed worker that will have to now (thanks to John McCain) attend certification classes to actually become a plumber and will have to pay the $1,200 in back taxes, which he owes to the state of Ohio. He is also a man thrust into an unwanted spotlight, mocked by many on Youtube.com and hounded by the McCain campaign to appear at rallies - until it became increasingly apparent that he was nothing more than another GOP opportunist. We are not saying that we relish in his undoing, despite the fact that he soared from obscurity in his attempt to catch Obama off guard and to ask him a truly disingenuous question about a business he never had any intention to assume. Now we know he was nothing more than a mere man from a segment of society that appears to be upset with the idea that one man can make a difference.

Fear not my friends, this archetype is far and few between. As we move closer to the eventual day when history is made, such pronouncements become lost in our collective past of bad campaigning. Soon the day will come when we can wake up and not see the stock market wildly swing 1,000 points. Actually, this is a time of great opportunity. Let us take advantage of the moment and "buy low". Allow me to implore my fellow American to to reinvest in America by not only buying stock in Wall Street but by voting Obama as POTUS; despite your party status, we all have a right to be prosperous.

Anxious people are difficult to be around. They do not learn well, they’re not adaptable, and they’re obsessed with the worst possible scenario. They’re not good at seeing any point of view beyond their own distress and fear, and they become experts at raining on parades. That is what John McCain, and the GOP party have been selling for eight years.

There are options. One especially, starts on November 4th.

Palin, Queen of Mediocrity

The bootstrap was once an American icon. Now, it’s a (laughable) punch line.

Whatever happened to the nation that our forefathers, our grandparents, or values once built? Weakness is more than a personal affliction today as many allow the reduced meritocracy to cave-in on itself.

So many people hoped and prayed for redemption but what they got was much more of the same. Now, today, a new dawn arises, however Palin is not the one who ushers in the next generation she is the one to kill it. We have become a nation emancipated from slavery, so why do we allow those in power to separate us from our profits?

Four decades ago, the late Sen. Roman Hruska of Nebraska defended an unqualified court nominee by saying, “There are a lot of mediocre judges and people out there. They are entitled to a little representation, aren’t they?’’ Hruska was mocked for his comments, but it turns out that he was just a little ahead of his time.

Lincoln, Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Kennedy, even Ronald Reagan, all united our country in times of duress and under the name of the great American experiment. Winston Churchill, after the battle of Midway, was quoted as saying the American race, "was the greatest race of all." However we face a time when this great democratic endeavor, this great American experiment, is infected with half-truths and misquotes, intended to strike fear in the hearts of the most loyal.

Adam Smith must be turning over in his grave.

In the wake of the US financial meltdown, as our economy teeters on the brink of its second Great Depression in less than 100 years, it looks like "nationalization" is the buzz word of the day. The Bush administration has ushered in the new age of a socialized United States by inviting the other members of the G-7 to Washington DC to participate in a brainstorming session to stifle the current calamity that has financial markets across the globe reeling.

Bush and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson have devised a new scheme to buy up parts of US banks to ease the bloodletting. This was part of a larger plan that the Bush administration and the other members of the G-7 developed to ease credit woes and to flood the world economy with cash. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com, said he believed that fears will be eased as markets "stabilize" as long as the new programs produce positive results in getting credit flowing again. "At this point, policymakers have said a lot and done a lot. Now markets will want to see whether it will work," Zandi said.

This appears to be one more reason that the myopic Bush Doctrine is an abject failure and why a vote for McCain is a detrimental decision for any voter. Four more years of policies that are designed to benefit everyone but the US taxpayer may very well bring this once great nation, and the world, to its knees.

Palin Exposed

Vice Presidential candidate, Sarah (Barracuda) Palin has often and regularly touted herself as a "maverick" and "reformer" - having stood up to special interests and corrupt politicians. Then today, she was found to have "unlawfully abused her power" as Governor when she attempted to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper because of a family grudge. To some this might be a glaring contradiction.

Investigator Stephen Branchflower, in a report produced by an Alaskan bipartisan panel that investigated the matter, found that Palin was in direct "violation of a state ethics law that prohibits public officials from using their office for personal gain." Further, in an apparent effort to enact a personal vendetta on a public official who stood in her way of firing her ex-brother-in-law, the Alaska governor violated her oath to office and her promise to the people of her state. The fact that she let a "family grudge" dictate her professional behavior smacks of the same kind of decision making that the world has seen from our current failed administration. Is this the beginning of the end of her run as the GOP grand savior?

Many people must ask themselves how they truly feel about a potential VP who has blatantly disregarded her charge as a public servant. Sure, no one is perfect but certain behavior is inexcusable if it happens even once. It is important that our leaders exhibit a particular moral platitude. It is important that they hold themselves to a higher standard, that they represent the best of all of us. Palin has now shattered her image as such a leader before she has even had a chance to prove otherwise.

Troopergate has been upgraded to more than just a distraction for the GOP Presidential hopeful. Gov. Palin's apparent contempt for the Alaska Executive Branch Ethics Act is not exactly the first indication of her weakness as a possible Veep. Palin's interviews with Charles Gibson and Katie Couric also displayed a glaring disparity between who Palin is and who she is being sold to be to the American public. No wonder the McCain camp has gone to great length to keep her out of the public domain since the Republican convention. Her qualifications, already suspect, took another major hit today with this new information. One can only imagine how much the panel's findings will affect McCain's bid for the Oval Office.

The McCain campaign will now have to work that much harder in the coming days to sell their image of being mavericks and reformers. The brash political move to invite Palin as his running mate was an easy sell at first, wooing the interest of many but now it seems as the package he is offering is a bit dented.

How Education will get America Back on Track

The key to this crisis may very well be in our education. Our country, in this ever increasingly specialized world, must be innovative. This only comes from educating our citizens as much as possible, however, what inducement do people have to assume large student loans neccessary to pay for specialized education if they cannot afford the simple staples in life like bread and electricity?

Education can be our nation's economic saving grace. I would like to see our candidate propose policy that will put education costs back into the national discussion. Rather than nationalize Wall Street, we should be nationalizing individual student debt, to best serve our nation.

Paying off people's bad debt on homes, autos and credit cards does not stimulate the US economy as it will only give those people incentive to go out and rack up more debt. Education is something different, it takes drive, determination and commitment. With more education, and less debt as a result of it, people will be inclined to spend more money and be able to better afford to do so. This approach is about building the US economy back from the ground up, rather than giving it to the few at the top in hopes that the effects of the bailout will trickle down to the average US citizen.

Socialize our nation's student debt and invest in our natoin's most precious asset, our students.

Anemic.

That word best sums up McCain's campaign to date. The McCain camp is acutely aware that time is running out as evident in the Maverick's many poor attempts at humor in Tuesday night's debate in Nashville. With 27 days left in the race, the "Straight Talking Express" had better start doing exactly that. McCain came across as coarse and colicky and his desperation was palpable. You spoke, Mr. McCain, we listened.

He made several distinctions about his opponent that were false. With the debate focusing on the current economic situation, for example, McCain tried to drive the point home that Senator Obama will raise taxes for the average US citizen, stating that Obama had voted to raise taxes 94 times, which is absolutely false. More simple GOP fear mongering.

McCain suggested that his health care plan would put the consumer back into the driver's seat and he promised "to keep families in their homes, avoid foreclosures, save failing neighborhoods, stabilize the housing market and attack the roots of our financial crisis" but without the votes in Congress, neither seem very likely.

Truth is that even the most staunch Republicans, like Karl Rove, are beginning to accept the fate of John McCain and his failure to best Obama. The next four weeks are crucial for McCain and he must show that he is not as confused about his programs as he seems.

Unfortunately Senator Obama's opponents, seen an unseen, have been winning the dirty war of political spin. Make no mistake, no one said it would be easy for Barack Obama. Of course, we are talking about the biggest stage in the entire world. The most powerful office in the land. Did we think Hillary would roll over and give it away? Do we think the Republican Party will be any less vicious in its character assassination attempts that are sure to come?

Make no mistake, this contest is for ALL the marbles. And to win it, ALL stops will be pulled. So far we are being bombarded with this nuisance of a minister in Chicago who just won't seem to go away. Reverend Wrong. Wrong for his message, Wrong for his opportunistic timing, and Wrong for representing the divisiveness much of America feels exists between our diverse communities.

We're spending billions of dollars at war, our economy is slowing, and many are faced with huge economic hardships. At a time like this, we should be talking to each other and finding real solutions to these problems. Remember that one man is trying to reach out and solve these problems.

With the upcoming election I have noticed an increase in the amount of emails circulating that like to use all types of tricks to persuade people who can't think for themselves. I have decided that I will start sharing some of these as they come in...

This morning I received an email titled "Freedom is Worth Fighting For." Here is the text included in the message:

Yes I have deleted much of those words that were said above this message, but when I read and re read the below I thought it said it all.. It will only take you a minute to pass this along if you wish to do so, if not that is fine, but remember these words.

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in their bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our children's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free"

This email was sent to me by someone who knows I am supporting Senator Obama for president. I guess the intended message was that Barack Obama, or Democrats in general, miss this point on national security, as if they don't realize the importance of protecting our country and our freedoms worldwide. Maybe I was supposed to think that only Republicans could defend our freedoms.

Whatever the intended message, this email came off sounding like a grandfather talking to a small child about the importance of freedom and the costs of such liberty. Although I agree with the statement, that's as far as it goes. I won't stretch the quote so far as to use it to promote one candidate or another. That's just silly. Any person running for President of the United States of America already has a good grasp on this concept. Otherwise there's no chance people vote for them.

Are people really believing otherwise after reading emails such as this one? If so, it's sad to see how easy people are manipulated.

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Montgomery County authorities say a man stabbed his brother-in-law during an argument over who should get the Democratic nomination for president. What's more, Jose Ortiz, 28, who's charged with felony assault, is a registered Republican.
District Attorney Risa Ferman said Ortiz supports Hillary Clinton and Sean Shurelds supports Barack Obama. She told reporters Monday that the two got into an argument in a Collegeville home Thursday night and Shurelds tried to choke Ortiz. She says Ortiz then stabbed Shurelds in the abdomen.
Shurelds was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but is expected to recover.

Obama Retains Delegate Lead

Barack Obama currently has 1,611 total delegates. Of those delegates 1,404 are pledged, and 207 are from Democratic party superdelegates. Democratic candidates need 2,025 to win their party's nomination.

At this point Hillary Clinton is in not too distant second place with 1,480 total delegates (1,243 pledged, 237 superdelegates.)

The next primary contest between the two candidates will be in Pennsylvania on April 22, 2008. Only forty days left... get your popcorn ready.
